March Creative Challenge

March 18, 2013

Light Inspired is excited to announce it will now be offering monthly creativity challenges within the forum area!

These challenges are offered to forum members only and offer a new opportunity to be featured on the Light Inspired blog.  If you want to participate, register for the forum today!

Each month, a new creative challenge will be posted within the forum.  Members will submit their entries and ten entries will be selected for feature on the Light Inspired blog.

This month, the creative challenge was inspired by the UNLEASH workshop, which begins on April 1st.  Participants were asked to go into their archived photographs and select one image that they felt showcased their voice and their vision, two key components that are covered within the Unleash workshop.

Posted in the submission thread:

“Think of it this way: if you could only show ONE image on your website, which image would it be? That one image has to summarize all that your brand is. It has to show potential clients what it means to have a session with you. It has to showcase your art, your heart, your voice and your vision, all in that one image.”

Undoubtedly, this was a daunting task.  We are so thrilled with the level of talent on the Light Inspired forum and are so proud of all of the entries.  The following are the ten entries selected for feature.  Thank you so much to everyone who participated and congratulations to the following photographers!

“This photo may not be technically perfect, but it sums up my purpose in photography right now so perfectly.  I want to be able to find the beauty in the everyday, normal, and mundane. In this case, finding beautiful colors and light in the totally normal bushes behind my house that I’ve looked at a million times before but never saw anything special.”

Photographer:  Megan Schreurs | Meganography
Location:  Hugo, OK
Specialty:  Macro and fine art

“I chose this maternity image as a representation of my voice and vision because in every moment behind my lens I strive to capture moments of emotion that speak through expressions and body language.  Everything about this image, to me, reflects every emotion this couple was probably feeling – from love for each other, to excitement for their baby, to a little bit of nervousness too.  For this couple to see this image and feel those emotions again means my voice and vision has been communicated clearly!”

Photographer:  Jessica Leigh Entingh | Jessica Leigh Photography
Location:  Chicago, IL – Western Suburbs
Specialty:  Maternity, newborn, children and family

“I had a really hard time choosing a single photo because I have my favorite “summer” photo that is how I envision my summer sessions going and my favorite “winter” session photo. I ended up choosing this winter photo as my vision for my business because it really speaks to my love of nature and vintage together.  I incorporate my love of quilts in so many of my sessions and this was just a shot I got of my daughter being natural and cozy on a cold winter day. ”

Photographer:  Amanda Zuech | American Honey Photography
Location:  Franklinville, NY
Specialty:  Outdoor country images of children, families and high school seniors

“This is my voice + vision. Seeing the extraordinary in Everyday Life. Some people see a kid riding a bike. I see the superhero pedaling her heart out thinking she can fly.”

Photographer:  Cindy Robbins | Cindy Robbins Photography
Location:  Northern New Jersey
Specialty:  Natural light, on-location, lifestyle, newborns, kids, families and teens

“This one image represents the authentic emotion I set out to capture in every storytelling session.  Whether it is love, happiness, sadness, or in this case laughter I want to capture my subjects as they are in their everyday moments.  In case you were wondering the joke was incredibly funny.  ;)”

Photographer:  Colie James | Colie James Photography
Location:  Boulder-Denver-Metro, CO
Specialty:  Lifestyle and storytelling maternity, newborn and family photography

“This image represents the carefree nature of my clients paired with our iconic red barn… along with a gorgeous landscape and bright, cheerful colors.”

Photographer:  Jennifer Warthan | Warthan Farms Photography
Location:  Waverly, VA
Specialty:  Barefeet and bliss

“I am transitioning from posed newborn sessions to ‘lifestyle’-inspired newborn sessions. The one image that I must capture for every newborn sessions is a quiet moment between Mom and her new baby – the epitome of calm, happiness, and love.”

Photographer:  Jill Serrano | Jill Serrano Photography
Location:  Massachusetts
Specialty:  On-location, natural light newborn, child and family photography

“This showcases exactly what i’m all about: capturing light and love in their purest forms.  It’s unfussy and simple, letting what really matters shine through!”

Photographer:  Caitlin Elizabeth | Caitlin Elizabeth Photography
Location:  Eastern Shore of Virgina
Specialty:  Natural light portrait photography

“I chose this one because I love the light, the connection between the
two of them, and the fact that they aren’t posed.  It’s just them being
them… which is what I want most for my business.  Real life, love and
beautiful light.”

Photographer:  Jessica Brandau | Forever Dear Photography
Location:  Wilton, WI and surrounding areas
Specialty:  Vintage-inspired photography for newborns, families, seniors and couples in love

“I chose this image because of it’s real and fleeting quality.  I’m drawn to meaningful & authentic moments that offer a story—-maybe in place & time, maybe in size & shape, maybe in engagement, maybe lucky enough to get all.   Here, perched on a backwards step stool, washing bowl that just contained his birthday cake batter, I draw so many conclusions.   The way he’s perched backwards on the step stool illustrates his confidence, bravery, and physical ability that a mere year ago didn’t exist.  Actually overestimating the reach of the faucet and splashing over the sides of the bowl reminds me he’s still six…that AND that he’s young enough to still think helping in the kitchen is fun :)  It is with images like this in mind–those that tell so much when you look at the details–that led me to a new project called Beautifully Ordinary.  I believe all of the perfectly imperfect moments of our life are what will tug at our heart and evoke stories around the kitchen table in the future.”
